Do I really need travel insurance?

Yes, often people make the mistake of underinsuring  and still incur lots of expenses. Don't buy based solely on the lowest price. I recommend you have at least the following 3 coverages:

1. If you're traveling internationally, YES. Most domestic health insurance does not cover you out specific side of the United States. You want to cover emergency hospital costs and emergency evacuation costs to prevent huge out of pocket expenses if you get sick or injured abroad.

2. Your trip is expensive, prepaid and normally non refundable. Trip cancellation/interruption protects that investment if you need to cancel for a covered reason (like unexpected illness, injury or severe weather).

3. If you or a loved one is of a questionable health status where a sudden illness could force you to cancel specific policies can cover those cancelations and medical emergencies.

What should travel insurance cover?

There are so many things it covers, such as medical, lost baggage, delayed or canceled flights and even if you get sick or hurt and can't go on the trip.  But I recommend it should cover:

1. Trip cancellation or interruption. Reimburses non-refundable costs. If canceled or cut short for a covered reason.

2. Travel medical. it should pay the high fees that foreigners are charged for travel emergencies, medical and dental emergencies and It should cover at least $50,000.

3. Emergency evacuation - It should cover the cost of transporting you to the hospital of your choice back home with at least $300,000 coverage. Not the insurance company's transporting you to the nearest "adequate" medical facility.

4. In addition it should cover travel delay expenses like meals and accomendations

Purchase IMMEDIATELY after you make your first major expenditure. As you add costs, you can increase the coverage. Many policies will cover preexisting conditions if you have been stable for a period of time and if you buy within 15 days of purchasing your travel.
